NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION:
Isola neighborhood
Isola is famous for the many places to eat or have an aperitif, but above all Saif recommends Tàscaro (Via Genova Thaon di Revel, 4): a quiet bistro with specialties, cicchetti and Venetian-style aperitifs.
The island of memory and miracles: a short walk from Ratanà is the Casa della Memoria (Via Federico Confalonieri, 14), a cultural center and exhibition venue dedicated to remembering the events of World War II. It offers events, houses an archive, a reading room and a study room.
Another interesting stop, in contrast to the modernity of Isola, is the church of Santa Maria alla Fontana (Piazza Santa Maria alla Fontana, 7) with its frescoes and legends related to the miraculous water of the various fountains still active.
Stores to discover: Isola is a neighborhood where life is good and nothing is lacking: from the tailor to the electrician, passing by the housewares store or the hardware store.
There is also gastronomy: the Pastificio Ratanà on Via Pastrengo 2, where you can find fresh pasta, small gastronomy, vitello tonnato, baccalà mantecato, mondeghili. A little taste of Ratanà, to be enjoyed at home. In addition, there is also the Esselunga supermarket just two tram stops away (or even a ten-minute walk).
A tour of the premises: Café Gorille (Via Gaetano de Castillia, 20) is open from morning until late evening with a café and cocktails; it's perfect for aperitifs. For a beer recommended BeerShow (Via Pietro Borsieri, 30), for an after-dinner, Barba (Via S. Gregorio, 40). On Isola, the bread is at Tondo, an artisan bakery (Via Cola Montano, 12). On Saturdays, shop at Il Verziere Bio market (Via Gaetano de Castillia, 26), where you'll find stands of local producers.
BICOCCA
Bicocca is not only the home of one of Italy's most important universities but a youthful, lively and dynamic neighborhood with its venues and cultural centers such as the Arcimboldi Theater, established in the late 1990s, which has become an icon of Milanese culture. The tourist attraction, which gave the neighborhood its name, is the aristocratic villino Bicocca degli Arcimboldi, the family's country home once built on a rural area of Milan, now an example of 15th-century country architecture. The redevelopment of this former industrial area is due to the contemporary art exhibition space Hangar Bicocca, which hosts temporary exhibitions and permanent installations by internationally renowned artists such as Anselm Kiefer. To immerse yourself in the greenery, you need only go to the Cherry Tree Hill, resulting from the storage of materials from the demolition of the industrial hub, where you can take a walk or bike ride.
NIGUARDA
It is a portion of the city of Milan rich in history, of a neighborhood that still preserves its popular spirit despite the major building and urban planning transformations that have affected it.
Located in the northern area of the city, the Niguarda district was once a suburban suburb, particularly prized for the amenity of the landscape and the salubriousness of the air so much so that it became a favorite place for the construction of country villas; among these still survive Villa Corio, now home to the municipal library, and the sumptuous Villa Clerici, enlarged and embellished at the behest of Anton Giorgio Clerici - owner in the city of the luxurious Palazzo Clerici where Tiepolo worked - and now home to the Gallery of Contemporary Sacred Art. At that time Niguarda was part of the municipality of the so-called Corpi Santi, whose suppression in 1873 determined the annexation of Niguarda to the Municipality of Milan.
In the last years of the 19th century, Niguarda was the protagonist of interesting cooperative and solidaristic experiments that led to the establishment of the Niguarda Building Society, among the oldest Italian building cooperatives. Finally, the Niguarda Hospital, is the twentieth-century extension of the historic Ca' Granda commissioned by Francesco Sforza, whose figure revives sculptural group by Arturo Martini placed at the hospital's entrance.
GETTING AROUND THE AREA:
From Casa Camilla you can move by public transport throughout Milan: the location allows ample freedom to reach the center: with the subway, you are in Duomo in 25 minutes, the Central Station in 15 with the Cà Granda lilac subway just 200 meters from the apartment, the line 5 that in 5 stops takes you to Garibaldi Station and from there with another 3 stops to Cadorna to reach the center on foot or from Garibaldi take the train to Malpensa airport.
Niguarda Hospital is within walking distance and the Bicocca University campus is one metro stop away. The effervescent Isola district, hub of Milan's night life, is 4 metro stops away, and here you can find restaurants, wine bars, the famous Blue Note for top jazz concerts, stores and boutiques of all kinds.
