DESCRIPTION OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD:
To the north-east of Milan, before 2011 the yellow metro terminated at Piazzale Maciachini, a wide open space at the side of the ring road at the origin of Viale Marche, where trams to Niguarda depart and you take Via Imbonati or the Milano-Meda motorway. Maciachini today is a lively area, with different ethnic groups and classes and traffic of people at all hours. The district starts from there, between Piazza Nizza and Largo Vulci, a cluster of middle-class (mostly Milanese) and working-class (mostly immigrant) residential blocks that follow one another up to Viale Zara, which acts as a dividing line with the Villaggio dei Giornalisti (Journalists' Village), so called because of the concentration of publishing professionals who settled there from the 1920s, around Villa Mirabello.
It is a neighbourhood of early and late 20th-century houses and villas surrounded by trees and greenery, some designed by famous architects, making it one of Milan's most beautiful and unexplored districts.
Between Via Melchiorre Gioia and Piazza Carbonari, there is the Maggiolina proper, an Arcadian village made up of 19th-century houses with gardens amidst a maze of small flowery streets sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding busy streets.

WHY GO THERE?
To see Villa Figini on Via Ettore Perrone, the rationalist stilt house designed and lived in by architect Luigi Figini (1903-1984), in partnership with Gino Pollini the leading Italian modernist architect. Figini designed the workshops, after-work and employee housing for Olivetti in Ivrea, the Hoepli building in Milan and designed the Harar quarter in San Siro and the Church of the Madonna dei Poveri in Baggio.
Visit the Villa Mirabello, an ancient noble residence in pure Lombard Renaissance style, with its typical ogival brick windows. The Murat Sports Centre, with a new park around it and a bike station, houses an indoor swimming pool and a multi-purpose hall for basketball, volleyball, handball, etc.

MOVING AROUND THE AREA:
From the flat you can move around the whole of Milan by public transport: the location allows ample freedom to reach the centre with the metro, which in 3 stops takes you to Stazione Centrale (from here you have buses to all Malpensa and Orio al Serio airports) and in 7 stops you reach Piazza Duomo. It is also close to the picturesque Isola neighbourhood, which you can reach with a pleasant ten-minute walk, full of restaurants, bistros, nightclubs and nice shops of all kinds.
These are the public transports to get to the area
- M3 Yellow: Sondrio, Zara, Maciachini
- M5 Lilla: Zara, Marche, Istria
- Tram: 5, 7, 31
- Bus 42, 43, 81
